One of the Dragons is a guy called Duncan Bannatyne, a man who made his fortune in nursing homes and gyms/health spas. He's worth more than all of the other Dragons combined, and knows the health industry like the back of his hand. They were watching a pitch in one of the shows where someone wanted them to invest in a health product, and Duncan said something that really stuck with me.
He told the story of how his spa wanted to increase gym membership, so they went to local businesses and asked why people wouldn't go to the gym. The response they got back was that people felt it was too expensive.
So to combat that, the gym gave 50 of the people who worked for the company a free membership for a year! So cost was no longer an issue, they were getting it all for free.
But people failed to turn up.
When they questioned why this was, people said that they didn't have transport, and the gym was too far away from them.
So the gym started sending a bus round to pick people up and bring them to the gym.
But still people didn't show up.
When they asked why again, they discovered that people didn't have the time, and the gym was shut at the unusual hours they wanted to go the gym. So the gym started doing extended opening hours to match what times people could do.
So people now have a free membership, free transport, and access at a time to suit them.
But still people didn't show up.
Again, the gym asked for a reason why.
The response they got?
"The dog ate my trainers."
OK, so there's probably a bit of joke and exaggeration in this story, but the point he was trying to make is 100% valid. Some people just can't be helped, because some people will always have an exscuse and always have a reason NOT to do something. These are the people who, no matter what you try and do for them, will always be the size they are, and in fact will probably get bigger and unhealthier because they are simply NOT prepared to commit to making a change or do something that might require a bit of work.
Why am I telling you this?
Because I don't want you to be one of those people, and sometimes it takes an explanation of someone who is making a mistake for us to realise that we may be able to relate to it ourself. I've been there, always finding an exscuse, always finding a reason. And where does it get you? Overweight, unhealthy and unhappy.
